Your Intention is the Anchor—It Keeps You Steady When the Storm of Distraction Rages
In a world of constant notifications, competing priorities, and endless demands, staying focused feels like a never-ending battle. How often do you start the day with good intentions, only to find yourself sidetracked by emails, meetings, or social media?
The truth is, distraction isn’t just a productivity issue—it’s a neurological challenge. And the key to overcoming it isn’t about eliminating all distractions (which is impossible). It’s about anchoring yourself in intention.
Let me introduce you to a simple model I’ve developed: INtention vs. OUTtension.
This framework helps explain the push-and-pull between your internal drivers (INtention) and the external forces (OUTtension) that pull you off course. By understanding this dynamic, you can rewire your brain to focus, stay motivated, and create lasting change.
The Power of INtention: How Your Brain Stays Focused
INtention is the internal force that keeps you aligned with your values, goals, and purpose. It’s what gives meaning to your efforts and helps you stay resilient in the face of challenges.
Neuroscience shows that when you act in alignment with your values, you activate the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for focus, decision-making, and self-regulation.
💡 Research Insight: Studies published in NeuroImage reveal that reflecting on our values increases activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC)—a key area for emotional regulation and goal-directed behavior.
🔹 What does this mean for you? When you connect your daily actions to a deeper purpose, your brain prioritizes focus and intention over distractions.
I call these “ventral anchors”—deep neurological tethers that stabilize your focus and keep you on track.
The Pull of OUTtension: Why We Get Distracted
OUTtension represents the external forces that hijack your focus and pull you away from your goals. These include:
❌ Digital Distractions – Constant notifications, social media, and email overload.
❌ Competing Priorities – Meetings, deadlines, and external obligations that don’t align with your goals.
❌ Social Pressures – Trying to meet the expectations of others instead of staying true to your purpose.
When you’re caught in OUTtension, your brain shifts into survival mode. Instead of making deliberate, value-driven choices, your amygdala (the brain’s fear center) takes over, making you reactive, stressed, and unfocused.
4 Neuroscience-Based Strategies to Stay Anchored in INtention
The key to maintaining focus is not to eliminate distractions—but to strengthen your internal anchor. Here’s how:
1. Define Your Core Values (And Use Them as a Compass)
Your values act as internal anchors, helping you prioritize what truly matters.
🧠 Neuroscience Tip: Studies show that people who regularly reflect on their values experience less stress and higher motivation.
✏️ Ask yourself:
- What are my top three values?
- Are my daily actions aligned with them?
- How can I structure my day to stay connected to my values?
2. Recognize and Minimize OUTtensions
Distractions are inevitable, but awareness helps you manage them.
🚫 Common OUTtensions to watch for:
- Checking emails first thing in the morning.
- Saying “yes” to everything, even when it doesn’t align with your goals.
- Multitasking (which actually reduces productivity).
🔹 Take Action: Identify the top 3 distractions in your daily life and set boundaries to minimize them.
3. Set Micro-Intentions to Create Momentum
Big goals can feel overwhelming, making it easier to procrastinate. Instead, break them into small, manageable steps.
✔ Instead of: “Get healthier.”
➡ Try: “Take a 10-minute walk during lunch.”
✔ Instead of: “Be more productive.”
➡ Try: “Complete one high-priority task before checking emails.”
💡 Why it works: Small wins trigger dopamine release, reinforcing positive habits and making it easier to stay focused.
4. Create an Accountability System
Accountability rewires the brain for commitment and follow-through.
👥 How to stay accountable:
- Share your goals with a mentor or accountability partner.
- Use a journal or app to track progress.
- Join a community of like-minded professionals.
💡 At Positive Success Group, we integrate accountability into all of our coaching programs, ensuring that leaders, coaches, and professionals stay committed to their goals.
Final Thought: Your Focus is a Choice
Distractions aren’t going away. But you can train your brain to resist them.
🔹 When you anchor yourself in INtention, you make decisions based on values—not pressure.
🔹 When you recognize OUTtension, you gain the power to minimize its hold over you.
🔹 When you take small, intentional steps, you build the momentum to stay focused and achieve your biggest goals.
So, the next time you feel pulled in a million directions, ask yourself:
💭 “Is this an INtention or an OUTtension?”
That simple question can help you take back control of your focus—and your future.
